The Worst Winter in 30 Years Claims Over One Thousand Afghan Lives The escalation of suicide bomber attacks and increased threats of violence have created an extremely tense and insecure atmosphere in Afghanistan. The situation is aggravated by a growing desperation fueled by scores of homeless people and refugees who have no place to go and little, if any, provision. Hundreds of families seek shelter in caves or tents, and the number of orphans continues to climb. Adding to the almost unbearable situation, government officials have reported that this is the worst winter in more than thirty years. More than one thousand Afghans have lost their lives due to the harsh winter conditions. Especially vulnerable are those without adequate shelter, food, and warm clothing. Amidst the growing insecurity and extreme winter conditions, the Faith in Action team, in partnership with several other organizations, recently delivered much needed relief aid to several areas. Many Afghans from mountain villages walked hours to receive their family packs containing relief aid items. The team also provided assistance to the neglected refugees living in tents. Central to our work in Afghanistan is the support of orphans, an effort continued during this recent trip. Impacting children has the long-rang potential of reversing the hostilities which have grown for generations. Serving the people and building strong relationships earns us the right to share the Gospel of Christ, the only hope for this dark place. |
